DEREK GORES
"I like my pictures to barely come together with teasing little details. Sort of like how the mind can't help but wander, even when trying to focus on one thing."
- Derek Gores
Derek Gores goes beyond the suggested parameters of collage artwork. There is an undeniable luxury to his work that is both unexpected and impressive. Derek doesn't just create scenes, he has successfully curated a world full of color, energy, and style. A world that closely resembles a high fashion daydream, and we just can't spend enough time there.
Derek Gores is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. He now resides in Melbourne, Florida where he can soak in the intellect and the culture of the Space Coast while conjuring up his latest creation. He finds that most of his inspiration comes from some of his personal heros like Gustav Klimt and Max Ernst. He is also inspired by natural beauty and the human form. He takes his time deconstructing figures and shapes that represent ideas of beauty. It is through this process of clipping and splicing that his work and his unique style truly come to life.
Enlisting the help of magazine clippings, labels and other digital mixed media, Derek creates layers on the canvas. He plays with the viewing experience. He doesn't like to give away the whole scene but rather likes to provide the viewer with just enough elements that the natural wandering of eyes can complete the puzzle.
"In the collages, some of the little bits I use are deliberate, but in most I'm trusting randomness to help build an end result more interesting than I could have planned. One friend calls it a 'Zen Narrative.' "
One thing is for sure, his style and approach to creating art has resulted in not only a large following, but recognition far and wide. He has exhibited his work in New York, Los Angeles, Sydney, Chicago and Miami and more. Some of his clientele include Lenny Kravitz, Madonna, and U2. His work was also recognized at the Manifest Hope DC Exhibit that coincided with the 2009 Presidential Inauguration. The following year he was named one of the "40 Important Artists of the New Contemporary Movement" while in an exhibition in London.
"I hope to create a real experience, instead of just a picture of an experience. But that sounds a little too huge... really I'm always hoping for that feeling of having the senses of a kid, where everything is new." - Derek Gores
