Biography

About Glass Artist Karen Bexfield

Karen Bexfield is an award-winning glass artist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, renowned for her intricate, kiln-formed glass sculptures. Holding a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from the Medical College of Virginia, Bexfield draws a unique and profound parallel between her physical therapy practice and her studio work. Since beginning her glass art journey in 2003, she has found both disciplines to be deeply cerebral, intuitive, and tactile.

Beyond the studio, Bexfield is fueled by an innate curiosity to explore the unknown. Her contemporary glass art is heavily influenced by the serenity of the natural world and her global travels across Egypt, Morocco, Tanzania, South Africa, Costa Rica, Italy, and Mexico.

Artistic Process & Kiln-Formed Glass Sculptures

Bexfield thrives on pushing the limits of her medium. Her creative process centers on carefully controlling the physical variables of mass, heat, and time to influence the movement of glass. Through this masterful manipulation, she creates nature-inspired glass sculptures that explore the poetic relationship between:

  • Positive and negative space
  • Light and shadow
  • Simple geometry and pure chance

Artist Statement

"On my studio wall is the quote, 'Satisfaction of one’s curiosity is one of the greatest sources of happiness in life.' Presently, I am exploring the limits of glass movement by subtly influencing the variables of mass, heat, and time. Within me, my artwork evokes a sense of tranquility—a reflection of nature’s organic patterns where simple geometry meets pure chance. My sculptures, though delicate in appearance, are strong in form and capture life’s spontaneity. The interplay of color, shape, and movement speaks to the raw yet purposeful unpredictability of nature, while the weaving of light casts shadows that intrigue, ultimately creating art within art."
