Biography
Hannah Lane: Celebrating Southern Heritage and Nature's Beauty Through Art
Hannah Lane, a proud native of Louisiana, embodies the rich vibrancy of Southern culture in her work. Known for her abstract expressionism and distinctive use of color, Lane celebrates the landscapes, cultures, and values that define her Southern roots. Now based in Nashville, Tennessee, her art continues to draw inspiration from the natural world and her deep connection to family and community.
A Journey Through Mixed Media
Lane's journey as an artist began with a strong foundation in illustration and graphic design, having graduated from the Savannah College of Art & Design. Her passion for painting blossomed after living abroad in Italy, where the marbled papers of Florence deeply influenced her creative process. In 2012, she began to experiment with Japanese and patterned papers, hand-pigmenting them to create layered compositions that are as complex as they are captivating.
Using a constructive process, she layers materials such as pigmented paper, pastels, and acrylic paints, creating work that pushes the boundaries of mixed media. As Lane describes, "The exploration of mixed media is endless and has been such a joyful ride." This fearless approach has allowed her to experiment with bold colors and innovative techniques, embracing both familiar forms and new subjects.
2024: Nature and New Horizons
As Lane reflects on her current inspirations, she emphasizes the importance of nature and the serene moments that fuel her creativity. "I find myself being drawn back to nature as much as possible. Hiking in Lake Tahoe, reading on my porch while the breeze blows through the trees & planning future trips near the water," she shares. This return to nature is mirrored in her recent work, particularly in her vibrant palm paintings.
Her artistic process has also evolved to be more daring. Lane notes how she's embraced "wild colors" and played with larger formats, particularly enjoying experimenting with the dyeing process of her papers. "My process has become more fearless over the last few years," she says, speaking to the confidence she has gained in pushing her creative boundaries.
Bold Colors and Fresh Themes
Color is central to Lane's work, with neon yellows, aquas, and blues dominating her palette in 2024. She revels in the way these bold hues breathe life into her compositions, often pairing them with the sharp contrasts of color blocking. "I have really added some bright and neon yellows lately that are just alive," she says, noting how they complement her signature blues.
This year, Lane has also been exploring new themes in her work, with her Crowd Series drawing inspiration from the people in her life and the live music scene in Nashville. "I find musicians & songwriters to be incredibly inspiring!" she shares, acknowledging how the rhythm and energy of Music City have influenced her creative output.
Between Nature and the City
Living in Nashville offers Lane the perfect balance of urban energy and access to nature. While Nashville’s vibrant music scene plays a role in her artistic development, she frequently travels, pulling inspiration from destinations near and far. Mexico, particularly Baja California, has significantly impacted her recent work, informing her palm series with its exotic, tropical landscapes.
Her deep connection to both places drives her creative exploration, allowing her to capture the essence of both bustling city life and the quiet beauty of nature.
A Perfect Day
Lane's ideal day is a testament to her love for both art and family. "2 cups of coffee and early morning reading on my porch before everyone gets up," she describes as the beginning of a perfect day. After her morning routine and some time with her kids, she heads to the studio, where the magic happens. "Ideally, getting lost in paint while listening to a great podcast with my studio door open and my dog laying nearby," she reflects, capturing the balance of solitude and creation.
The afternoon is often filled with the chaos of family life, but Lane finds joy in the simplicity of making dinner and spending time outdoors with her boys before an early night. It's this balance of creativity, family, and gratitude that drives her success.
Hannah Lane’s Evolving Legacy
Hannah Lane's work is a powerful testament to the beauty of Southern culture, the healing power of nature, and the joy of creative expression. As her art continues to evolve, she remains committed to pushing the boundaries of her medium, experimenting with bold colors and themes, and sharing her artistic journey with the world.
Her fearless approach to art, paired with her Southern roots and passion for nature, makes her a standout in the world of contemporary mixed media. With her work now showcased in galleries and collections across the country, Lane's star continues to rise—reflecting both the strength of her artistic vision and her unwavering connection to the world around her.
The Crowd Series is one of my most iconic collections, inspired by my big, beautiful Louisiana family and the joyful spirit of Southern gatherings. I grew up surrounded by cousins, friends, and neighbors—many from families as large and lively as my own—where faith and family were at the heart of everything.
Over the past 12 years, this series has evolved with new patterns, papers, and symbols that reflect the changing seasons of life. Each Crowd painting is a kind of meditation, a reflection on the deep truth that we’re all connected. Rich with personal symbols and intuitive mark-making, these pieces push the boundaries of mixed media and invite you to see something familiar in a new way.
Whether you're drawn to the vibrant energy, the quiet details, or the sense of belonging they evoke, each Crowd carries its own unique aura—waiting for the right person to bring it home.
