Nicole Katsuras
Nicole Katsuras is a Toronto-based abstract painter known for richly colored, heavily textured oil paintings of dreamlike floating worlds and islands shaped by maps and topography. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from Central Saint Martins in London and an Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto. Her work is in collections including McCarthy Tétrault, Encana, RBC Capital Investments, Holt Renfrew, and Luciano Benetton, and she was invited to exhibit in "Material Matters" at The Courtauld Institute of Art in London. She has also designed luxury silk and wool rugs for Stark Carpet in New York.
Katsuras builds as much as she paints, layering oil with unusual mark-making tools until some areas rise in extrusions up to an inch high. Inspired by Japanese Ukiyo-e prints and by childhood memories of fold-out maps in National Geographic, she creates lyrical abstractions drawn from nature, water, and color, with a lasting pull toward blues. Studio E Gallery in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, represents Nicole Katsuras.
