Portrait of Ann Griffith

Ann Griffith

Ann Griffith is a South Florida-based abstract painter whose layered, textured work is guided by Wabi Sabi, the Japanese aesthetic that finds beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and incompleteness. Drawn to things weathered by time, she makes paintings that carry their own history in their surfaces. Art runs in her family: her mother was a painter and sculptor, and her grandfather spent Indiana winters painting in his attic, a legacy she sees as the base her work is built on.

Each painting begins with stripes or blocks of color that alternate between thick impasto and light glazes. Griffith then scrapes, digs, and reworks the surface to reveal what lies beneath, balancing control and chaos until the painting reveals itself. Her recent work adds open space and bold splashes of color to her signature textures. Studio E Gallery in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, represents Ann Griffith.
