Randy Akers

Randy Akers is a contemporary painter based on Skidaway Island, Georgia, known for expressive mixed-media paintings of humble, weathered dwellings he finds in remote parts of the world. His work has been shown at the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Anchorage Art Museum, and the Masur Museum of Art, among others, and he has completed artist residencies in Ireland, Portugal, Spain, France, and Wyoming. In an earlier career, Akers directed and designed international television commercials, movie titles, and music videos, and he is a member of the Directors Guild of America. He holds an M.F.A. from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and has taught at SCAD and the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Akers paints rusty, run-down places and makes them feel honored. Partway through each painting, he lets the color take over, then reworks the surface with chisels, sanders, grinders, and razor blades. False starts and construction lines stay visible, giving every panel a raw, layered history.
